Policy statements Crime, and fear of crime, are significant concerns for older people. Older women in particular report extremely high levels of fear of crime, and many older people cite fear of crime as a significant factor in limiting their ability to get out and about. While national statistics show that older people are less likely to become victims of crime than younger people, research for Help the Aged amongst older people living in socially deprived areas showed that some 40 per cent of them had been a victim of crime in the last two years. Furthermore there are some forms of crime to which older people are more likely to fall victim, for example bogus caller crime.
