Policy statements Participating in the Community and Activities (June 2008) Older people continue to come up against barriers that prevent their participation in the community, learning new skills, or taking up a hobby. In this policy statement, Help the Aged calls on Government, Local authorities and service providers to enable greater access for older people to their communities and activieis in their local area. NCAA Position Statement (2005) National Council for Active Ageing policy statement for 2005. ^topBriefings Consulting and Engaging with Older People (November 2007) This ShortCut is the first in a series of five briefing papers that sets out issues for those involved in commissioning, providing and receiving volunteer support associated with home care and intermediate care services. It presents key findings from research carried out in 2005/6 by the Older People's Programme on services provided and supported by British Red Cross, CSV/RSVP and Help the Aged. The future role of the third sector in social and economic regeneration (August 2006) In their strategy for an ageing society (Opportunity Age), the government highlighted the importance of volunteering for older people and for society as a whole. The benefits gained from volunteering are enormous for the organisation, society as a whole and for the volunteer. However, despite the numerous benefits, older people often find that they are unable to volunteer because of their age. This report draws attention to the numerous barriers for older people to volunteering, which include direct and indirect age discrimination; transport and mobility; access to education and fear of crime. Help the Aged details how the Treasury should consider major initiatives which could play a part in developing a long term legacy in relation to older volunteers and intergenerational volunteering. Choosing health choosing activity (June 2004) Help the Aged response to the consultation paper Choosing Health, Choosing Activity, welcoming the Government's commitment to increasing the levels of physical activity amongst the population. Learning for Living (July 2008) This report details the skills older people may need to ensure they do not become isolated or excluded, and remain active in society - citizenship literacy, health literacy, ICT literacy and financial literacy. The report examines the forces and trends which will shape our communities as we go forward and how these drivers of change can be managed in order to make places better for older people. Making a Difference through Volunteering. Report (July 2006) Full report of the research carried out between May 2005 and May 2006 on volunteer services. The project marked the first joint initiative designed and undertaken by Community Service Volunteers (CSV), British Red Cross (BRC) and Help the Aged (HtA). National Coalition for Active Ageing (2006) Summary of the work of the National Coalition on Active Ageing.
